Happy February!

First I want to thank everyone who brought school supplies. We got enough of everything to get us through the rest of the school year! I TOTALLY appreciate it!

I am excited to finally be getting into addition and subtraction. We will focus a lot on math fact fluency of sums to 10 (1+1, 2+5, 4+6, etc), adding to 10 to make a teen (10 ones + 3 ones =13 ones), and subtraction within 10. We will also practice different strategies: number line, fingers, tens frame, tallies, pictures, objects, etc). Any extra practice with this at home will be beneficial.

In reading and writing, we just learned 5 digraphs (2 letters that make 1 sound such as "th" "sh" "ch" "ng" and "qu"). We will be reading stories that focus on these sounds along with many sight words that most of your children are pros at. Now they will have a chance to use them instead of just memorizing them. We will also be focusing on 3 different parts of a sentence: noun, verb and adjectives. In our writing, we will practice using these and making complete sentences.

We are focusing A LOT on having correct behavior in the classroom. We have discussed keeping our hands to ourselves, making good choices and showing leadership and knowing when is the right time to talk/listen vs. the right time to play. We are also practicing using kind words and expressing our feelings. For example: I feel mad when you take my book out of my hand without asking. Please remind your child of these expectations and encourage them to practice at home.

Valentine's Day is approaching! We will be celebrating on Feb. 12 during PACT time. Look for more information about this in your child's Friday Folder this week.

Join us for LITERACY NIGHT on Thursday Feb. 11 from 5:30-7:00. If you have extra books around, have your child bring them in for the book swap. They will then be able to swap them for "new" books on literacy night. Also don't forget to wear your best Star Wars attire!

PACT for this month will be as follows:
  • Feb. 5: Fiction vs Non-Fiction (I would love to have 5-7 parents for this activity)!
  • Feb. 12: Valentine's Party
  • Feb. 19: Letter Writing
  • Feb. 26: NO PACT
Thank you for all you do for your children. If you have any questions, please ask!!
